Is the mini-bar still cool?
Mini-bars offer
wonderful
incremental
revenue that, if
managed right,
could bring a lot to
the bottom line.
Why is it then that
many hotels
worldwide are
doing away with
the mini-bar?
Research has shown that
while there are still guests
who use the mini-bar, this
has been declining steadily
for some time and has
dropped considerably since
the global economic crisis.
Travellers are just so much
more concious of what they
spend. Many hotels have
reported that more and
more guests are buying their
soft drinks and snacks from
nearby supermarkets and
requesting that the mini-bar
stock be removed to make
room for their own supplies.
Stylish space solutions
Innovative use of
space makes it
possible for you to
give your guests
more options –
and providing
more options
makes your
property more
attractive to a
larger audience.
The two products featured
in this edition that not only
provide “space-smart” solutions,
but also do so with
impeccable style, are the

Sofa Manufacturers.
When is a welt not a welt?
Interior decorators
and designers
and furniture sales
people speak
English, the same
language I do. But
sometimes I get
the idea that they
don’t.
When they say a couch has
welts, I immediately think of
the angry red marks the boys
bragged about after a visit to
the headmaster’s office!
What they are talking
about, is the covered cord
frequently used to strengthen
or decorate a seam on a
couch or form the edge on
cushions. It’s the same word
with two different meanings.
Every profession develops
its own jargon, its own use of
words and its own terminology. You may think furniture
salespeople are talking about a violent
wrestling match when they speak of
knock-downs, corner blocks, convoluted
springs, arm stumps and a distressed finish.
Versatile space
How often have
you wished that
the bedrooms
in your
establishment
were a little
bigger, or that you
had the space to
accommodate a
few more people
in your breakfast
room?
Many B&Bs and guest
houses were not purposebuilt
and add-ons or alterations
are prohibitively
expensive. You may not be
aware that the cost of building,
furnishing and fitting a
large hotel is calculated per
square metre, so obviously
space is important to larger
establishments too. The key
is to make the most practical
use of the space available
and where possible, have
the versatility to make use of
the same space for more
than one purpose.
One just needs to look at
the caravans of today to
know what I am referring to.
Furniture care and maintenance
There is no
getting away from
the fact that good
quality furniture,
whether it is
indoor or out,
needs to be
cared for and
maintained.
Not only will this keep the
object looking great, but it
will protect it and make it last
for a lifetime and more. Here
are a few ideas on how to
keep your solid hardwood
furniture and various types of
outdoor furniture in tip top
shape, and how to maintain
your furniture’s upholstery
and leather coverings.
